Nermin Karim OD, JD, LLM (she/her)
Restorative Justice for Gender-Based Violence is an approach to justice that aims to empower the harmed party,
limit re-traumatization, create safety in truth-telling, and prevent future harm, while uplifting the humanity of all involved.
Nermin’s work as a Restorative Justice Facilitator is informed by her early experience as a lawyer in family law, mostly with women leaving abusive relationships. Much of her early learning came from volunteer opportunities with the Rise Women’s Legal Centre, West Coast LEAF and Atira’s Community Legal Clinic in the Downtown Eastside of Vancouver. She then found a home for many years with the North Shore Restorative Justice Society (NSRJ) as the manager of their pre-charge, police diversion, Restorative Response Program. She left NSRJ to pursue her Master of Laws focusing on the use restorative responses to gender-based violence. Most recently, Nermin has been NSRJ’s Director of Programs and Operations. Nermin has four adult children and a grand-dog named Oogway. She loves sunrises, sunsets and the ocean. During her play time, you will likely find her on the seawall or exploring a trail on the North Shore.
